About Burkes Beach
Hilton Head Island has a number of beaches, many with lifeguards, restrooms, and other amenities. Burke’s Beach is found off William Hilton Parkway. It has limited parking and no lifeguard or other amenities. It is a quiet beach, though, so can be a good place to take a rest from the tourist bustle of the rest of the island.
Burke’s Beach is dog-friendly in the mornings before 10 a.m. and after 5 p.m. during the summer. It is walking distance from Chaplain Community Park, which includes Best Friends Dog Park.
Hilton Head Island was first occupied seasonally by Woodland Indians at least 10,000 years ago. Spanish explorers arrived in 1526. They were driven out by the English 60 years later. English Captain William Hilton named the island after himself in 1663. The English did not develop the area until 1698 and they were hampered by Indian and Spanish intervention. Relics from the Revolutionary and Civil wars can still be found on the island. The town of Hilton Head was incorporated in 1983.
Island attractions include boating, bicycling, horse riding, golf, tennis, and spas. Boat excursions vary widely, from luxury yacht outings to dolphin watch trips and nature eco-tours on an inflatable expedition craft. Visitors can choose from a range of lodging options ranging from house and villa rentals for groups and family gatherings to resorts with spas. Some resorts boast their own tennis and golf courses as well as pools and ocean views. The island has more than 200 restaurants to select from. A number of these establishments focus on seafood but steak, Mexican, American, and other types of cuisine can also be found.
Hilton Head Island has much to offer visitors from gourmet meals to outdoor sports or a day of pampering at a spa. For a quiet walk beside the ocean, with or without a companionable dog, Burke’s Beach is one of the best places a visitor can choose.
