Hilton Head Island offers excellent saltwater fishing that can be enjoyed right from the beach, but it is important state and local regulations are understood and followed.

South Carolina legislation requires a saltwater recreational fishing license for all who fish clams, crab, fish, oysters, and shrimp. The license is easy to acquire and the cost is nominal. Children under the age of 16, seniors, and those with a disability license are exempt from this legislation. Consult the South Carolina Government web site for specific information on fishing regulations.

Surf fishing on Hilton Head Island is both popular and fun. Light spinning rods, heavy surf-casting rods, and fishing gear can be rented from various suppliers around the island. Fishing tackle and supplies are readily sold from numerous vendors. To get started, you will need spin casting equipment or a heavy surf rod, a two- to three-ounce pyramid weight, a dropper rig with two or three hooks, and frozen minnows or shrimp for bait. If you don’t know exactly what you'll need, trust the rental shops on the island. They will provide valuable assistance and advice on fishing gear, fishing methods, and the best fishing locations.

Flounder, red and whitefish, sea trout, and Spanish mackerel are but a few of the more popular catches around Hilton Head. Sharks are in abundance around the island, but state regulations restrict the fishing of shark (called “chumming”) from shore. It is also illegal to fish near swimming areas. It is important to know, understand, and respect the local fishing regulations. Always fish well away from any swimmers and be conscious that currents may drag your line up or down the beach.
