Sports and Recreation near Hilton Head

Aside from beaching, the primary sport of Hilton Head Island is golf. Hilton Head is famous for its golf courses. It is home to over 25 fabulous courses, many of which have been architected by some of the greats in golf: Robert Trent Jones, Davis Love III, Arthur Mills, and Arnold Palmer, to name a few. Hilton Head also hosts the MCI Heritage Golf Classic, which is held in Sea Pines Plantation.

Hilton Head has no shortage of sports and recreation. The island abounds with things to do.

Water sports are immensely popular and many of these sports can be enjoyed from a variety of locations around the island. Beaches feature rentals as diverse as Sunfish sailboats to water toys, such as four-wheel paddle boats. Jetskies can be rented to explore and enjoy the intercoastal waterway. Kayaking is also very popular. Kayaks can be rented individually or as part of a group tour that follows a tour guide. This is a great way to explore the intercoastal waterway, learn history, see exotic mansions, and even enjoy being followed by dolphins. Just remember, dolphins can follow you, but you cannot follow them. Hilton Head has easy-to-follow laws that respect the wildlife in and around the island and your tour guide will alert you to each of them.

One of the more popular sports on the island can be chartered in Harbor Town. Parasailing is a wonderful way to see the island and the Calabogie Sound from an elevated view. Parasailing companies offer tourists a chance to strap on a parachute, a life vest, and a chest harness. A tethered line safely winches you out 500 feet in the air while a boat circles you around the Calabogie Sound. This is a very safe experience, one most vacationers find to be the highlight of the vacation and an experience they will never forget.

For those who wish the stay on the ground, a relaxing bike or horse ride through the woods or on the beach is a serine experience. Lawton Stables has a number of horses that offer relaxed rides through beautiful, natural surroundings.

Hilton Head Island is an exciting place to experience a variety of sports and also many relaxed ways to become one with your natural surroundings.
